Snehanilayam

Snehanilayam is situated in Loyola Nagar, Suryapet in the economically most backward district of Nalgonda in Andhra Pradesh. The institution looks after the disabled and old, socially discarded people of God. They lack nothing and all their needs like nourishing food, medical care, clothing, spiritual guidance and recreational facilities, etc., are provided. Everything is done to keep them happy and contented. It is indeed a Home away from home.

Due to the untiring efforts of the late Rev. Fr.Carlo Bonivi, PIME, a zealous and well-known missionary in the diocese, the then Bishop of the Diocese Rt. Rev. Mathew Cheriankunnel, invited the Montfort Brothers of St. Gabriel, to realize the dream of Fr.Bonivini – a home for the aged and disabled.

It was back in 1979 and the Brothers took up the challenging and much needed project, gave finishing touches to the buildings, equipped and furnished them. It was blessed and inaugurated by Bishop Mathew on December 8, 1980.

Since both aged men and women and handicapped children were to be admitted the Brothers approached a Congregation of Sisters by name Nirmala Dasikal to help run the home. They very willingly and generously accepted the request and sent 4 sisters to join the team of Brothers, who had volunteered for this new type of apostolate then.

As always, the beginning was difficult and a lot of hardship had to be faced. The finance required for the developmental activities was provided by the Province.

The accommodation consisting of four blocks – male and female wards, separate quarters for Brothers and Sisters – was inadequate as the number was increasing. Hence a new block with dining halls for the people and staff members, kitchen, store room etc., in a central place was built.

With a view to make the Home self-supporting, cultivation of some of the land at our disposal is taken up. With the help of open wells and drilled bore wells irrigation facilities have been arranged at considerable cost. But the seasonal rains steadily decreased, affecting the flow of water into the wells, hampering the efforts at farming.

The Home does not receive any financial assistance from government. The generous could come forward to share in funding the home.
